✨ADVOCACY MATTERS✨
•
I feel really passionately about the importance of advocacy within birth; and in thorough antenatal education which supports you to do this
•
Advocating doesn’t have to mean conflict; it can mean working together with your health care providers/birth team to ensure you are at the center of your birth experience and receiving individualised care
•
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP YOURSELF ADVOCATE DURING PREGNANCY, BIRTH & BEYOND?
✨Get informed, educated and empowered! - understand your options and rights
✨Ask questions and speak up if you’re not clear on something; do you understand what is being recommended and why?...and is that recommendation based on policy/guidelines or specific to you?
✨When being advised about risks - the absolute risk should be explained, not just relative
✨Ask for the evidence
✨Choose your birth partner wisely; are they well informed, are you on the same page and can they advocate for you if needed?
✨Create a birth plan(s) and be clear on your choices
✨Get professional support - hiring a birth Doula can make a huge difference to your birth outcome and experience...many doulas are currently offering virtual support, even if they can’t join you in the birth room due to current restrictions
✨Remember - you are the most powerful person in your birth. Your choices matter and you have the right to care which supports and respects your dignity
