Non-consensual procedure

Trigger warning – lack of consent to a postnatal physical procedure

When I had been transferred from the consultant led unit to the MLU a midwife looked at my stitches. She commented that they looked very tight. She asked who had delivered my baby, when I told her she nodded and said she knew who had done it just by looking as that particular consultant had a ‘signature style’.

A few days later, at home, in so much pain that I couldn’t sit down, another midwife removed that extra stitch and provided instant relief. I can’t help wondering how many other woman were ‘branded’ by this man and how he was able to get away with that?

Looking back on that time I feel like my body was violated without my even knowing it. I wonder why the midwives didn’t just call it the husband stitch, which is clearly what it was.
